Abstract
Purpose: Febrile seizure (FS) is a benign convulsion commonly seen in children. Several risk factors are known to be associated with recurrence of FS and a recent study has identified multiply recurring FS as an additional risk factor of epilepsy. Therefore, this study aims to verify the risk factors of multiply recurring FS in children.

Method: The data of 270 children admitted to Wonju Severance Christian Hospital for FS from January 2010 to December 2011 was collected retrospectively. The patients were divided into three groups: 1) the non-recurrent group with only one occurrence of FS, 2) the recurrent FS group with two instances of FS, and 3) the multiple recurrent FS group with three or more instances of FS during the follow-up period. We analyzed the three groups for risk factors of multiple recurring FS.

Results: The risk factors identified included age at FS onset (earlier than 18th month or later 36th month of life) and whether the first FS was a complex FS. Particularly, age at FS onset was associated with a nearly 4-fold increase in risk of subsequent multiple recurrence, compared to a 1.6-fold increase in risk associated with the first FS being a complex FS. Mothers¡¯ history of FS was found to have greater influence than fathers¡¯.

Conclusion: It is considered that the age at onset and whether the first FS was a complex FS, instead of familial history, were two most important factors contributing to multiple recurrence of FS in children.
